BMW F30 & F31 3 Series Headlight Upgrade Guide: Halogen or Xenon to IKON LED

VMSS BUYING GUIDE

The F30 saloon and F31 Touring are some of the most popular BMWs on UK roads, and most still wear their original headlights. Whether yours are dim halogens or tired xenons, a complete IKON set gives the car a modern LED face with switchable daytime lights in one swap.

The quick answer

You only need to know one thing: did your car leave the factory with halogen or xenon headlights? Choose that version at checkout. IKON V2 starts at £530 and is the best-value route to the LED look.

Step 1: Halogen or xenon?

Your headlights How to spot them
Halogen Bulbs in open reflector bowls, and a beam-height wheel on the dashboard
Xenon Round projector lenses behind the angel eyes, and no beam-height wheel
Xenon with AFS Looks like xenon, but the beams turn with the steering

Our IKON sets are made for halogen and xenon cars without AFS. If your beams swivel when you turn the wheel, message us before ordering and we'll tell you what fits. To be certain, our headlight identification guide shows you how to check your VIN codes.

Not for the F34 Gran Turismo. The 3 Series GT uses a different headlight shape. Everything in this guide is for the F30 saloon and F31 Touring.

Step 2: Choose your style

Set DRL colours From
IKON V2 White and yellow £530
IKON V2 tri-colour White, yellow and amber, or white, yellow and red £650
Black Shadow Edition IKON V3 White and yellow £580
Black Shadow V3 tri-colour Amber or red, plus yellow and white £730
Two Tone IKON V3 White and yellow, F80 M3-style black and chrome trim See listing

Want a projector look instead? See our Laser Style V2 and Snake Eyes sets, both available for halogen and xenon cars.

V2 or V3?

V2 gives you the 1:1 OEM design, DRL memory, an upgraded heatsink and a start-up animation. V3 adds brighter DRLs, a custom blacked-out housing and a fix for DRLs falling out of sync. Two Tone V3 keeps the chrome lens outline and projector bezels with a black eyebrow trim, for an F80 M3 look.

How the IKON beam works on the F30

F30 IKONs use a segmented geometric optic array. The LEDs fire through thick, shaped lens sections rather than one open reflector bowl, which gives the same sculpted block look as the factory unit. All segments run fixed-on: there's no camera, no steering-angle control and no adaptive shut-off. Aim them after fitting with our wall method.

Switching DRL colour

The DRLs start up white. Flash your high beam to switch: five flashes for white, six for yellow on dual-colour sets. Tri-colour counts are in each product description. Use white on the road and save the other colours for shows.

Fitting

The F30 needs the front bumper off to reach the headlights, so allow around two hours. Plug the IKONs into your factory connector, test everything before the bumper goes back on, then refit and aim. No coding is needed for the main lighting functions, and if your car ever needs any, it's free. Our install guide has the full video, or book a VMSS Verified Installer.

Questions customers ask

Does it fit the F31 Touring?

Yes. The F30 saloon and F31 Touring share the same headlights. Only the F34 GT is different.

Will they be brighter than my halogens?

Yes, by a big margin. You get a whiter, wider LED beam with a sharp cut-off. Aim it properly after fitting to get the full benefit without dazzling anyone.

Will I get a dashboard warning?

Most cars show none. If one appears and you'd like it gone, we can remove it remotely for £30. Our warnings guide explains why it happens.

What's in the box?

A pair of complete headlight assemblies, left and right, with all LED drivers and modules already inside.

Not sure if you have halogen or xenon?

Send us your reg or a photo of the back of your headlight and we'll confirm the right version before you pay.
