The BMW roundel has looked the same for over a century. A BMW digital badge changes that: it swaps the factory emblem for a small round screen that can play animations, show still images or display your own content. You'll see them called display badges, LCD badges, screen badges or digital emblems, and they all mean the same thing. This guide explains how they work, which BMWs they fit, how they install and what to know before using one on UK roads.
What is a BMW digital badge?
A digital badge is a circular display housed in a badge-shaped casing that mounts where your factory roundel sits. Instead of a fixed printed logo, it shows whatever you choose from an app on your phone: an animated BMW roundel, a 50 Year anniversary logo, community-made animations, or a photo or video you upload yourself.
The best-known example is DOT by Vusi Studios, which VMSS sells in the UK as part of our VMSS × Vusi Studios collaboration.
How the DOT display emblem works
DOT pairs a small high-resolution screen with a power control box that sits out of sight behind the panel. Everything is managed from the official DOT app for iPhone, iPad and Android. Day to day, that means you can:
- Pick from a growing library of animations, or download designs from the community showcase.
- Upload your own content, with videos at up to 60 fps or still images.
- Build playlists and save them for different moods, meets or drives.
- Set a boot animation that plays every time the badge powers on.
- Use Dynamic Triggers to change the display automatically by speed, location or time.
- Switch on Night Mode, which balances brightness for each animation after dark.
- Create a Party to sync animations with friends' DOTs, whether you're driving together or miles apart.
What makes a good display badge?
Cheap screen badges are easy to find online, but the badge sits on the outside of your car in rain, road salt and pressure washers. These are the things worth checking:
- Screen quality. DOT uses a high pixel density IPS LCD panel, rated by Vusi at over 1,000 nits so it stays readable in daylight, with a 60 Hz refresh and 0.1 ms response for smooth motion.
- Glass. Optically bonded anti-reflective glass cuts glare and keeps the image sharp rather than washed out.
- Housing. DOT's casing is CNC-machined from a single piece of aluminium and polished, so it looks like a premium part rather than a plastic gadget.
- Weather sealing. DOT carries a manufacturer IP69 rating against dust and high-pressure, high-temperature water. Ask for an IP rating on any badge you're considering.
- Software and support. An official app that receives updates, plus a real warranty. DOT includes a 12-month limited hardware warranty.

How installation works
Fitting a digital badge is more involved than swapping a plastic roundel, so plan for an afternoon or book it in with a fitter. The process is:
- Test the kit on the bench before mounting anything.
- Remove the trim and the factory badge.
- Drill a centred 16 mm opening for the cable.
- Route the display cable through and connect it to the control box.
- Connect power, then finish setup in the DOT app.
The kit includes the DOT display, power control box, power cable, two display cables and a 12V adapter for a quick connection to your car's 12V outlet. Vusi Studios publish a written installation guide and an instructions page. Because the job involves drilling, we recommend professional fitting.
Using a digital badge on UK roads
This is the bit most sellers skip. UK lighting rules restrict flashing and moving lights on vehicles, so a constantly animated badge on a public road can attract attention you don't want. The sensible approach is to save the full animations for car shows, meets and when you're parked, and use a static image or DOT's TÜV Mode when driving. TÜV Mode lowers the brightness and gives the badge the look and behaviour of a brake light so it blends with your rear lighting. No display mode makes the badge road-approved on its own.
As with any modification, tell your insurer. Failing to declare a mod can affect a claim. This is general guidance rather than legal advice, so check your own situation if you're unsure.

Frequently asked questions
What is a BMW digital badge?
A round display that replaces the factory BMW emblem and shows animations, still images or your own content, controlled from a phone app. It's also called a display badge, LCD badge, screen badge or digital emblem.
Is a digital badge the same as an LCD or LED badge?
People use the names interchangeably. DOT uses an IPS LCD panel, which gives accurate colour and wide viewing angles, rather than a grid of individual LEDs.
Can I upload my own animations?
Yes. The DOT app lets you upload videos at up to 60 fps and still images, and download animations from the community showcase.
Does fitting a digital badge require drilling?
Yes. Installation involves drilling a centred 16 mm opening for the cable behind the badge position. Professional fitting is recommended.
Is a digital badge legal in the UK?
UK rules restrict flashing and moving lights on vehicles, so keep animations for shows and when parked, and use a static image or TÜV Mode on the road. Declare the modification to your insurer. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
Is it waterproof?
DOT has a manufacturer IP69 rating, meaning it is sealed against dust and high-pressure, high-temperature water.
How long does delivery take?
DOT is currently on preorder for Batch 2. Orders ship when the batch releases; allow 2–3 weeks for delivery.
