How to Identify Your BMW Headlight Connector (6, 8, 9 & 10 Pin Guide only for F80 F82 F83 F32 F33 F36 IKON Headlights)

The number one cause of fitment mistakes when buying BMW headlights is ordering the wrong connector variant. BMW used different headlight connectors across halogen, xenon and LED specs, and the pin count is how you tell them apart. This guide shows you how to check in two minutes so you order right first time.

Why the connector matters

Aftermarket IKON and laser-style headlights are sold in variants - commonly 6 pin, 8 pin, 9 pin and 10 pin - because they're designed to plug straight into the connector your car already has. Match the variant to your connector and it's plug and play. Get it wrong and it won't connect properly. VMSS replacement headlights are plug and play, with no coding required when you select the correct connector and chassis variant.

What each pin count generally indicates

This varies by model, but as a rule of thumb on F-chassis cars:

  • 6 pin - typically the later LCI LED headlight spec.
  • 8 pin - typically Pre-LCI xenon (non-adaptive).
  • 9 pin - typically Pre-LCI xenon adaptive.
  • 10 pin - typically Pre-LCI LED adaptive.

Halogen cars use their own connector and are usually the most straightforward. Always confirm against your actual car rather than assuming from year alone.

Found your connector type? Compare these options, then select the matching variant on the product page. These headlights are plug and play with no coding required. Confirm the correct chassis and connector variant before ordering.

Still unsure? Send us a photo of your connector and we'll confirm the right variant before you order.

How to check your connector (step by step)

  1. Remove one front wheel and remove arch liner/fender liner. (on some models you can reach the connector without removing arch liner but by removing arch liner fender liners headlight access panel/cover/flap).
  2. Locate the headlight's main electrical plug at the back of the unit.
  3. Unclip it and take a picture of the connector face.
  4. Count the pin slots - that's your 6 / 8 / 9 / 10.
  5. If you're not 100% sure still, take a picture and send it to us and we'll confirm.

If you can't easily reach the connector, two other clues help: your car's original headlight type (halogen, xenon or LED - often listed in the original build/options) and your production date (Pre-LCI vs LCI vs LCI2).

Cars originally fitted with adaptive headlights

VMSS replacement headlights are plug and play with no coding required, including the correctly matched 9-pin and 10-pin variants. Match the connector and chassis when ordering. Adaptive functionality is a separate feature: check the chosen product listing for the functions it supports.

Order with confidence

When you're on a product page, select the variant that matches your connector. Not sure? Photograph the connector and message us before ordering - it takes seconds to confirm and saves you a return. Tell us your chassis code, year and original headlight type and we'll match the exact variant, whether that's our F80 M3 / F82 M4 IKON headlights or another chassis. Getting this one detail right is the difference between a clean plug-and-play afternoon and a frustrating mismatch - so check before you buy.

FAQ

How do I know if my BMW is 6, 8, 9 or 10 pin?

Unclip the plug at the back of the headlight and count the pin slots. Photograph it and send it to us if unsure.

What if I order the wrong pin variant?

It won't plug in correctly or it plugs in but won’t work. Always confirm your connector first - message us a photo and we'll check. We can replace your headlights but we will have to charge you return and redelivery fees.

Do adaptive (9/10 pin) cars need coding?

No. The correctly matched VMSS headlights are plug and play, with no coding required. Select the correct 9-pin or 10-pin variant for your car.
