Yellow CSL DRLs in the UK: Why Switchable Beats Fixed, and How to Stay MOT Ready

VMSS BUYING GUIDE

Yellow daytime running lights, inspired by BMW's CSL race cars, are one of the most popular BMW mods right now. The catch is that UK rules expect daytime running lights to show white. That's why every VMSS IKON switches between colours, so you can have the look and stay on the right side of the MOT.

The quick answer

Drive on the road with white DRLs. Switch to yellow, amber or red when you're parked up, at a meet or at a show. With switchable IKONs it takes a few flashes of the high beam from the driver's seat.

The problem with fixed yellow modules

Many yellow DRL kits replace your white DRL boards with yellow ones permanently. That means your car shows a non-white daytime light every time you drive, and the only fix before an MOT is taking the headlights apart again. Red to the front is a bigger problem still, as red lights are for the rear of a vehicle.

How switchable DRLs solve it

  • White for the road. Every switchable IKON has a white mode, which is the one to use when driving.
  • Colour when you want it. Flash your high beam to switch to yellow, amber or red, depending on your set. On RGB IKONs, you choose the colour in the app.
  • No tools, no coding. You switch from the driver's seat in seconds.
MOT day tip: V2 and V3 IKONs have DRL memory, so they come back on in the last colour you used. Switch to white before you drive to the test centre, and before you head home from a show.

What the MOT tester looks at

The tester checks your lights work, show the right colour, and that the dipped beam is aimed correctly. That last one catches out lots of people after any headlight swap, so aim your new lights with our 10-minute wall method. Choose RHD for UK roads

We make IKONs in RHD and LHD versions. On UK roads, order RHD so the dipped beam is shaped for driving on the left.

Questions customers ask

Can I drive with yellow DRLs?

We recommend white on public roads. Use the coloured modes when parked, at shows or on private land.

What about amber and red?

The same rule applies. Tri-colour sets add amber or red for shows, and switch back to white for the road.

Which IKONs switch colour?

All of them. Dual-colour sets switch between white and yellow. Tri-colour sets add amber or red. RGB sets can show any colour from the app.
