BMW has revealed a 7 Series that looks almost standard but hides factory-integrated ballistic protection. At the same time, late-breaking reports offer our clearest listen yet to the next petrol M3 and a new signal that BMW ALPINA intends to keep V8 character alive.
Today’s BMW highlights
- The official BMW Concept 7 Protection uses M760e plug-in-hybrid power and discreet armour designed for a lower threat level than BMW’s VR6 and VR9 protection cars.
- A camouflaged next-generation petrol M3 prototype has been filmed starting up, but its 2028 timing and detailed specification remain reported rather than officially announced.
- BMW ALPINA has publicly put a specially tuned V8 at the heart of its new-era identity; the expected G72 7 Series application and powertrain detail remain unconfirmed reporting.
BMW Concept 7 Protection: the 7 Series in plain sight
Officially confirmed — 12 October 2026
The clever part of the BMW Concept 7 Protection is what it does not show. BMW has integrated thicker ballistic glass, steel and fibre-reinforced protection into the doors, roof, bulkhead and rear wall while preserving the appearance and luxury-car character of the production 7 Series.
BMW says the car complies with the new BayB standard and is intended to protect against selected commonly encountered handgun ammunition, including 9×19 mm and .44 Magnum. It is deliberately positioned below the blast-capable BMW X5 Protection VR6 and the higher-security 7 Series Protection, which reaches VR9 with VPAM 10 available as an option.
Power, cabin and everyday details
| Powertrain | M760e xDrive-based plug-in hybrid: 3.0-litre straight-six, electric motor and eight-speed Steptronic |
|---|---|
| Combined output | 450 kW / 612 hp and 800 Nm |
| Protection | BayB standard, with armoured glass, ballistic steel and fibre-reinforced composites |
| Special equipment | Intercom, attack alarm, partially opening side windows and a digital interior mirror |
| Availability | Still a concept; BMW says its initial focus is selected European markets, with no UK price or launch date confirmed |
The rear cabin also previews a BMW Individual console with a folding table, wireless charging tray and cool box. That console is a more concrete production detail: BMW says it will become available for 7 Series models during the second half of 2027.
What it means for enthusiasts
This is not a new mass-market 7 Series derivative yet. It is a factory-engineered study for buyers who need more protection than a normal luxury saloon but not the weight, cost and higher certification level of a full VR6 or VR9 vehicle. The important engineering message is that BMW tunes the brakes, chassis, driver-assistance systems and powertrain as one complete car rather than adding armour afterwards.
Next petrol BMW M3 heard testing
Credible prototype report — not a full official reveal
BMWBLOG reported on 12 October that a heavily camouflaged next-generation M3 prototype has been filmed starting up at close range. The wide arches and combustion-engine soundtrack support its identification as the petrol successor commonly referred to as G84.
What is solid is the continued development of a combustion M3 alongside the electric model. What remains unconfirmed includes a reported 2028 arrival, standard xDrive, automatic-only transmission and possible 48-volt assistance. The prototype reportedly lacks an obvious charging port, which points away from a plug-in-hybrid layout, but camouflage footage cannot settle the final production specification.
For enthusiasts, the reassurance is simple: the electric M3 is not replacing the straight-six car overnight. BMW appears to be developing the two in parallel, with closely related Neue Klasse-inspired design but very different drivetrains.
BMW ALPINA puts the V8 back in focus
Official V8 signal; model detail still reported
BMW ALPINA has stated that a V8 refined by its engineers will underpin the brand’s characteristic blend of effortless performance and composure. BMWBLOG’s 12 October report connects that statement to the expected G72 version of the facelifted 7 Series.
There are no official power, torque, price or launch figures yet. Reports suggest a petrol V8 without plug-in-hybrid hardware, potentially with mild-hybrid assistance, and tuning focused more on low-end torque and long-distance refinement than chasing an M-car power figure. Treat those details as informed reporting until BMW ALPINA publishes the car itself.
BMW M Motorsport: more customer-racing titles
Officially confirmed — 12 October 2026
BMW’s latest M Motorsport customer-racing roundup records a class victory and title for Turner Motorsport at the Indianapolis 8 Hour, NLS title wins for Schubert Motorsport and Adrenalin Motorsport Team Mainhattan Wheels, and a third Italian GT Sprint title for Jens Klingmann. These results are separate from the DTM and WorldSBK stories covered in our previous update.
What VMSS is watching
VMSS follows BMW’s latest model, lighting, bodywork and technology developments because they shape the aftermarket parts, bodykits and lighting modifications we design, manufacture and supply.
For the next M3, the useful visual clues are the wider arches, Neue Klasse-influenced face and different cooling and exhaust requirements between electric and petrol versions. Similar styling does not guarantee interchangeable bumpers, lighting, undertrays or sensor positions, so genuine fitment work must wait for production-car measurements and electronics data.
The Concept 7 Protection is a niche factory vehicle rather than an aftermarket opportunity. Its integrated armour and recalibrated safety systems are also a reminder that appearance alone never proves component compatibility.
