BMW has given its first fully electric M3 the most important badge in the division—M3—while the M4 GT3 EVO has added another European championship to its record. Here is what is confirmed, what remains unknown and why both developments matter to enthusiasts.
Today’s highlights
- BMW’s own wording identifies the coming car as the fully electric BMW M3, not “iM3” or “M3i”.
- That does not yet give UK buyers a price, order date, specification or confirmed delivery date.
- Team WRT won the 2026 GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup Teams’ title with the BMW M4 GT3 EVO.
The electric M3 keeps the M3 name
BMW’s official production announcement repeatedly calls the forthcoming model the “fully-electric BMW M3”. BMWBLOG highlighted the significance on 4 October: official prototype material uses M3 branding, including a car carrying a simple “BMW M3” plate, with no electric “i” in the model name.
This is more than a badge detail. BMW normally separates its electric cars with names such as i3, i5 and i7. For the full M car, BMW appears to be putting the M3 identity ahead of the powertrain: the electric version is an M3 first.
What BMW has actually confirmed
- The car is a fully electric BMW M3 and the first high-performance model using BMW M Neue Klasse technology.
- It will be built exclusively at BMW Group Plant Munich.
- Munich becomes an electric-only vehicle plant from 2027.
What is still unconfirmed for UK customers
BMW has not yet published a UK price, on-sale date, delivery timetable, final power output, battery capacity, range, trim structure or option list. The factory’s 2027 electric-only transition should not be treated as a confirmed customer-launch date for the M3.
What it means for modifications
The familiar name does not mean familiar parts. The electric M3 belongs to a new architecture and its production bodywork, lighting, sensors, cooling paths and mounting points remain undisclosed. Current G80/G81 exterior parts and lighting should not be assumed to fit. VMSS follows developments like this because accurate chassis and equipment data underpin the aftermarket parts, bodykits and lighting modifications we design, manufacture and supply.
Team WRT wins the Sprint Cup Teams’ championship
BMW confirmed on 4 October that Team WRT secured the 2026 GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup Teams’ title at Barcelona. It was the Belgian team’s 12th Sprint Cup teams’ championship in 14 appearances, and the team also won the season’s Pitstop Challenge.
The title came without a straightforward finale. In the second race, Kelvin van der Linde gained 15 positions during the opening phase before the #32 BMW finished sixth. The #31 car recovered to eighth. Valentino Rossi and Max Hesse were heading towards a top-ten result in the #46 until a loose door forced an extra stop and left them 38th.
The wider GT World Challenge Europe season is not over: the Endurance Cup finale is scheduled for 17 October at Portimão.
The enthusiast takeaway
BMW is protecting the emotional value of the M3 badge even as the engineering underneath it changes completely. At the same time, the M4 GT3 EVO is continuing to prove the current combustion-era M platform in customer racing. For enthusiasts, the next few years will not be a simple switch from old to new—petrol and electric M cars will overlap, but their fitment and technology will diverge sharply.
