BMW Drops Diesel from the New 3 Series: What It Means for Owners

The next BMW 3 Series saloon is moving on from diesel. In a report published on 29 September 2026, BMWBLOG says a BMW spokesperson confirmed that the new G50 will offer petrol and petrol plug-in hybrid powertrains, with no diesel option. The plug-in hybrid is expected in 2027, while the electric i3 provides the fully electric alternative. [1]

For anyone who has loved a diesel 3 Series, that is a significant change. For customers planning their next modified BMW, it also raises a practical question: what does the next generation mean for the parts and upgrades we choose?

What will UK buyers be able to choose?

BMW’s UK launch announcement lists the petrol 320 and six-cylinder M350 xDrive, alongside the electric i3 40 xDrive and i3 50 xDrive. UK petrol deliveries are scheduled for January 2027; the electric models begin arriving in autumn 2026. [2]

The important distinction is the model generation. The announcement concerns the new G50 saloon; it should not be read as a statement that BMW has stopped producing every diesel model.

A quick guide to the names: G50 identifies the new combustion-engine 3 Series saloon. The fully electric i3 is the NA0. They share a design direction, but the names should not be used interchangeably when checking parts and fitment.

Is BMW abandoning diesel altogether?

No. BMW’s own 7 Series documentation lists a six-cylinder diesel 740d xDrive for a November 2026 launch, with Euro 7 compliance. The change to the 3 Series is therefore part of a model-by-model shift, rather than a complete withdrawal of diesel from the brand. [3]

Already own a diesel 3 Series?

A new model announcement does not change the fitment of the car already on your driveway. If you are planning a lighting upgrade, a new front splitter or a full bodykit, the starting point remains your exact chassis, body style, build date and equipment.

For lighting, original headlight technology, connectors and adaptive functions can matter as much as the model badge. For bodykits and aero, bumper design, mounting points, exhaust layout and sensor positions need to be checked. A part advertised for a “3 Series” is not automatically suitable for every 3 Series.

Our advice: choose upgrades around the car you own and the finish you want to achieve. A change in BMW’s future engine range is not a reason to rush into a different car or abandon an existing build.
