What Is a Headlight E-Mark? Why It Matters When You Upgrade

Headlights aren't just about looks. They decide how far you can see at night and whether other drivers can see you without being dazzled. When you upgrade them, you want to know they're built to a proper standard. That's exactly what an E-mark tells you.

The quick answer

An E-mark is a small approval symbol moulded into a headlight. It shows that design was tested to UN ECE lighting standards. Want to know about a VMSS headlight? Ask us before you order and we'll confirm the markings on the exact version for your car.

What is an E-mark?

An E-mark is an approval symbol moulded into a headlight: a letter E inside a circle. It shows the headlight design has been tested and approved under UN ECE lighting regulations, the standards used across the UK and Europe. Because it's moulded in rather than printed, it stays with the headlight for its whole life.

How to check for an E-mark

Look on the lens or the top of the housing for a capital E inside a circle (or a rectangle), followed by a number. The number shows which country approved it, and the code next to it identifies the approval. If you can't find one, ask the seller to confirm the markings before you buy.

Why E-marks are important

Safer for youApproved headlights are tested to put light on the road where you need it, so you see further and more clearly at night.
Safer for everyone elseThe beam has a controlled cut-off, so oncoming drivers aren't dazzled when the lights are aimed correctly.
MOT and inspectionsTesters check your headlights work, are aimed correctly and meet the lighting rules. Approval markings are part of that.
Proven qualityApproval testing covers how the headlight performs, not just how it looks. Cheap unmarked lights skip all of that.
Peace of mindIf anyone ever asks, the marking is moulded into the headlight itself.
Built to lastAn approved headlight is designed to keep performing properly, year after year.

Approved lights vs lights "for show"

Plenty of aftermarket headlights sold online carry no approval at all. They can look similar in photos, but there's nothing to show they light the road properly or won't blind other drivers. Some are only made for display or off-road use.

E-marked headlights: international recognition and U.S. requirements

E-marking is recognised in markets that apply the relevant UN ECE lighting regulations. Acceptance depends on the country, the approved headlight version and how it is installed.

For U.S. buyers, an E-mark alone does not establish compliance with U.S. requirements. Replacement headlights must meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 (FMVSS 108), and the DOT marking represents the manufacturer’s certification of compliance. DOT does not pre-approve individual headlights.

Before ordering for U.S. road use, ask VMSS to confirm the certification and markings of the exact headlight version, along with fitment and the correct beam configuration. ECE approval should not be presented as automatic U.S. approval.

Getting the most from your new headlights

Whatever headlights you fit, the rest comes down to installation. To keep everything right once they're on your car:

  • Fit the right version for your car, plugged into the factory connector. Our identification guide helps you choose.
  • Aim the beams after fitting. It takes ten minutes: here's how to do it.
  • Use white daytime lights for everyday driving. Yellow is a styling option, so check local rules before using it on the road.
  • Keep the lenses clean and check every function works now and then.
Quick pre-MOT check
  • Dipped and main beam work on both sides.
  • Indicators flash at a normal speed with no warnings.
  • Daytime lights come on with the ignition.
  • Beams are aimed correctly.
  • Lenses are clean and undamaged.

Questions customers ask

Are VMSS headlights E-marked?

Markings depend on the model and version. Ask us before you order and we'll confirm the markings on the exact headlights for your car.

Do I need any paperwork for my MOT?

Your tester checks the headlights themselves: that every function works, the beams are aimed correctly and the lights meet the rules. Keep your order confirmation in case you're asked about them.

Will my new headlights be MOT-ready?

An MOT checks the whole installation: every function working, correct beam aim and no warnings. Run through the pre-MOT check above before your test.

Is an E-mark recognised outside the UK?

Yes. E-marks are recognised across the UK and Europe, and in many other countries that use UN ECE standards.

Are E-marked headlights automatically accepted for U.S. road use?

No. E-marking and U.S. certification are separate. The exact replacement headlight must meet FMVSS 108 and carry the required DOT certification marking; an E-mark on its own is not sufficient.
