Find the VIN

The VIN is the car's 17 character ID. It tells us the exact model, year and spec, so everything on your list is guaranteed to fit. Four ways to find it, pick the easiest:

Look through the windscreen, bottom corner

  1. Stand outside the car at the front and look at the bottom edge of the windscreen, where the glass meets the bonnet.
  2. There is a small black plate with 17 characters stamped on it. On UK cars it is usually the passenger side corner (your right as you face the car), but check both corners.
  3. Take a photo of it or type it in below. Letters I, O and Q never appear, so a 0 is always a zero.

Open the driver's door, look at the door frame

  1. Open the driver's door fully and look at the door frame, below the door catch and the tyre pressure sticker.
  2. There is a black plate with the BMW roundel and the car's weights. The VIN is the 17 character line above the barcode.
  3. Some BMWs also have it stamped under the bonnet, but the door plate is easier to photograph.

If they use the My BMW app

  1. Open the My BMW app on their phone (the blue icon with the BMW roundel). Sign in with their passcode or Face ID.
  2. On the home screen tap the car button in the top right corner. This opens the Garage.
  3. The VIN is printed under the vehicle card, 17 characters. Screenshot it or type it in below.

The V5C logbook

  1. The V5C is the registration document from the DVLA. It is usually kept with the car's paperwork at home.
  2. On the front, under Vehicle details, find line E, labelled VIN/Chassis/Frame No. That is the 17 character VIN.
  3. Insurance documents and finance agreements usually show it too.

Spaces are fine, we tidy it up.
