Reports show how far BMW’s next electric cars can travel in endurance demonstrations. Here is what was reported on 15–16 October, with the context owners need to interpret the numbers.
- Reported iX5 and China-spec i3 50L runs demonstrate long-distance capability, but do not establish everyday UK range.
- Shanghai’s M Festival hosted the electric M concept; it remains a concept.
The iX5’s reported 500-mile journey needs context
Specialist report — 15 October 2026. BMWBLOG reports that an iX5 completed a roughly 500-mile California trip on one charge, with an indicated further 50 miles remaining. [2]
The distinction matters: 500 miles was reportedly driven; 550 miles is an extrapolation from remaining range. The publication says the full route, average speed and extent of efficiency-focused driving were not disclosed. This is not an independently verified UK range test or a new certified range figure. Buyers should compare the eventual specification, wheels and certification applicable to their market.
China’s i3 50L reportedly covers 1,213 km
Reported manufacturer demonstration — 15 October 2026. BMWBLOG and Autohome report that the China-specific i3 50L completed 1,213 km, approximately 754 miles, without recharging, arriving with 1% indicated charge. Reported consumption was 8.8 kWh/100 km. [3] [4]
The mixed-road run is a demonstration, not a guarantee for owners. Average speed and detailed test conditions remain unavailable in the reporting checked. The long-wheelbase Chinese specification also must not be treated as identical to a UK i3. CLTC, WLTP and US EPA figures measure different things and should not be compared as interchangeable numbers.
M Festival brings the electric concept to Shanghai
Event: 11 October. First-hand report: 15 October 2026. BMW’s M Festival at Shanghai International Circuit hosted the Chinese debut of the M Concept Neue Klasse. BMWBLOG describes a paddock rich in modified G87 M2s and G81 M3 Tourings. [5]
The concept’s appearance is news about BMW’s future direction, not a final production specification for an electric M3. The report does not establish production power output, final lighting or aftermarket fitment.
Smaller updates for the enthusiast diary
- M3 CS Handschalter — reported 15 October: BMW USA’s new retro-style commercial celebrates the manual car. The commercial is new; the model is already announced. Predictions that it will be the last manual M3 remain predictions. [6]
- BMW Art Car — announced 15 October: Julie Mehretu’s Art Car #20 will feature in “Turning Towards the Sun” at Zeitz MOCAA, Cape Town, from 11 December 2026 to 15 August 2027. [7]
- Poland — reported 15 October, opened 24 August: a BMW dealer now operates at Warsaw’s former FSO site. This is a showroom and service development, not BMW restarting car production there. [8]
Follow-up: the US i5 range discrepancy remains
BMW USA still lists the 2027 i5 eDrive40 at 278–310 miles, compared with the 328-mile maximum reported elsewhere yesterday. Its page notes that some new-model figures are preliminary. No clarification resolving the difference was found today. [9]
What this means for modifications
Regional models and concepts need careful identification. A Chinese long-wheelbase car or a concept photograph cannot prove that lights, bumpers or bodykits fit a UK production model. VMSS follows BMW developments to inform the aftermarket parts, bodykits and lighting modifications we design, manufacture and supply.
